Hardsurface Dump
This time, I'd like to start a new thread containing Highpoly-Speedmodelling-Hardsurface-3D-Models
![]() So let's start with a canon. BTW I guess I will make every model of this thread available for anyone who needs it. Just check out the "Some Silo Models" Thread in the Model Contributions section of this nice forum. ![]() Good night. Cheers "ko'gen".

Thanks lovisx, but actually it's not.
It was just a simple idea. Actually I just wanted to rig something technical. The only problem was, that I didn't have any models with movable parts. The canon took three and a half hour for the modelling part in Silo. Maybe I sculpt some things later on. Cheers "ko'gen".

Nice modeling ko'gen.
My only critique would be that the barrel looks a little long for that style of gun. I could be wrong, knowing that cannons have been made in all kinds of styles by tons of makers. Excellent work for a few hours! |

I'm afraid to start something unwanted here, but I can not resist...
3.5h hours of work for such a geometry! I always asked myself why people want to do "hardsurface-modeling" in Subd... As a matter of fact something of that complexity would take a tiny fraction of the time with Nurbs-modeling. It should seriously not take much more than half an hour... |

The barrel is the easiest to do it with nurbs.. U could take some circles and loft them together for the barrel..etc..and u are done.. the rest can be poly..also you can always convert your nurbs model to sub-d or poly... Its good practice to use silo for hard surface modeling. Last edited by VisualKing; 06-08-2008 at 07:25 AM. |

Hei,
I guess we have a little discussion. First let me say: I agree. Okay let's specify that: It might be true, that you get faster results with Nurbs but -correct me if I'm wrong- Silo is not able dealing with NURBS and that's good. I don't like 'em. I guess to become professional you have to learn using NURBS, but in fact, you could achieve the same results with Polymodelling. It might take a little more time yet, but I hope things becoming better over the time. The good thing about polymodelling Hard-Surface stuff is, that I have absolute control about every vertex. If I use Nurbs I can only drag some Control Points around. It's like modelling with jelly. But you are absolutely right, this kind of thing shouldn't take that long. I see now, that I shouldn't have modeled the barrel out of a cylinder extruding edgeloops but creating a control line and lathe it. Okay. Next time I might be able to change that. Thanks for your remark polyxo. Cheers "ko'gen". P.S.: I'd like to see an algorithm in Silo that creates, hard edges, when it comes to Subdivision. This would make life easier, cause most of the time you get confused by bevelling all those tiny edges ![]()

Hallo ko'gen.
If one have a plan or a reference itīs easy to achieve via viewport image, edge-, lathe tool and creased edges within a few minutes. But nonetheless three and a half hs sounds like relaxing enjoying modelling. Keep up the good work. Cheers P. |

Hehey, looking good, your stuff polygon. I guess I'll try another siege-weapon. Basically the problem was that there was no reference side-image, just one viewed from above.
Maybe I should also admit that I'm a little bit rusty with Hard-Surface Modelling cause I do mostly just organic things... that's also one of the reasons, why I want to do more stuff like that. Polyxo, no problem, critism is always good, I'll try to get faster. ![]() Cheers "ko'gen".

I like it, simple though you may think it to be Ko'gen. Reminds me of how badly I need to do hard surface stuff. Hope you get the chance to sculpt into it a little.

Next model:
Roman siege weapon... quiete popular in the 3D world, I think. As I said you can download the whole model from my Thread in the "Models Contribution"-Section or my page. Cheers "ko'gen".
