How did you get the metal plating, the bolts, and so forth, to like they're separate pieces of metal? I've just started trying to model something mechanical myself, and I can't get any of the pieces to look like anything other than one misshapen clump.

bobtronic - yeah taking this all the way to low poly and textured.

liquid - there is quite a bit of floating geo and most the objects are not connected. The best way to get started is building knick nacks, bolts, and random techy details. This way you can develop your skills in making hard surface geometry then try tackling a full project.

everyone else thanks!

bit of progress here. Low poly is 5800 tris. still more texturing to do and then getting this into ut3.

great work. One texture suggestion, maybe make it look more metallic... and perhaps a little dirt/wear.

Looking pretty sexy

Depending on the surroundings and age, I'd try to get some cooler burn marks round the nozzle, maybe bullet marks in the shields.
And I'm guessing it's not finished, but the spec on the grime and burns still look a bit too shiny still
