Woodpecker Toy
This is my weekend Silo/Strata project.
I really like Silo's improved UV tools! Just being able to generate my template image from Silo saves me from having to use UVmapper between Silo and Photoshop. This model is based on a toy in my artifact collection. I think it was made in Russia. |

That looks pretty good. My only suggestion would be to add some little nicks or blemishes in the wood here and there.

Thanks Will:
It definitely needs a little 'roughness'. Still very plasticky looking. |

Thanks guys!
I've got a LOT of work to do to the texturing on this one, but am VERY pleased with how simply the UV's unwrapped. I only made very small adjustments to the pelts before I had them useable. Loving 2.1's UV Tools! It was nice to map and unwrap the un-subdivided mesh and then subdivide it AND the UV's afterwards. BTW: It has been a long time since I posted anything. We've been subdividing our property and this Summer was the culminating period in a year of Red Tape, Permits, Surveyors, Engineers etc. A LONG and expensive process, not for the feint of heart. It's all finalizing now, and I'm back to creating some 3D stuff again. Glad to be back. dasch |

You could be right.
There IS some sort of stamp and markings on the bottom. I'll see if I can decipher them when I make my final textures. |

Nuther render
Here's another render of the same model/textures.
Just a lighting change and some post-production in Photoshop. ![]() |

This is really really nice. good job. You captured a lovely illustrative feel on this one, exactly the kindof 3d I like.

Hey, thanks guys!
I'm not really crazy about photo-realism myself; much more fond of a less-perfect look. Glad that you like this illustrative look. I also like to use renders as a 'base' to draw from; using pencil or paint. |

Good luck building the toy. I have no claim to the design of this toy - I think it is of traditional design. I'm not really even sure how it is linked inside; but it seems simple enough. Thanks, and let me know how it turns out. |

Will do! It's a simple plunger pressing on the 'see saw' of the bird. I build a cnc machine from scratch and that has a 4th axis (rotary axis) like a BBQ spit. I will use that to make the parts.

One thing I noticed is that the plunger has some sort of 'spring' to it. After you push the plunger and release it, the bird returns to it's 'rest' position and the plunger goes back up. Maybe it's just the weight of the bird and the balance of the parts that set it back to 'rest'. ? Hey, now that you mention your CNC machine - have you ever tried out any of my dimensional clipart from VectorArt 3D? The link is below. Do you build models in Silo for carving? |

Yup, the weight of the bird will pull it back. A spring would make it a 'Xtrme Pecker 2000'. Also good for thumb training. Get two to act as 'texting trainer'. lol....
And yes, I know that site. Now as you mentioned it I visited it again and was glad I did. I avoided the site before as they did not have a format besides their proprietary one. Now I see they also have STL versions of the models which is very nice a it allows better integration than before. And yes again, I do develop my own carvings with Silo, but I also use Rhino a lot besides MOI3D and Cinema4d.... Cheers Lemo |
